Lion Camp holds a prime position in one of the best game viewing areas of the South Luangwa National Park.

Accessed by a 3 hour road transfer from Mfuwe Airport, the lodge is on the banks of an oxbow lagoon overlooking an open grassland which is frequented by grazing mammals during day time, and becomes a hunting ground for lions by night.

Lion Camp is a privately owned and operated lodge in partnership with Mantis Collection a conservation minded company whose properties are uniquely created to be in tune with their environment. The camp is situated in a remote part north of the Park with abundant and uncongested game viewing. It is also distinguished by its friendly staff, personalised service and excellent food.

Lion Camp has just ten Canvas and Thatch Tents with private decks consisting of 2 Deluxe Suites and 8 Luxury Suites – all ensuite. The tents are built on raised decking to give optimum views over the lagoon.  The Deluxe Suites are more secluded and come complete with outdoor bathtub – so a very romantic option!

Lion Camp main lodge consists of a guest lounge with viewing deck, dining room and large bar.  A swimming pool and camp boma are perfect for relaxing between game drives. Also features a library and gift shop.

Wildlife & Birdlife

The South Luangwa has one of the highest concentrations of game in Africa, making it a fantastic destination for an African wildlife safari.

The Luangwa River also has an extraordinarily high number of crocodiles.

The Luangwa is known for huge herds of elephants and was once dubbed the “Valley of the Elephants”.

Large pods of hippos are seen in every stretch of the river, there are estimated to be at least 50 hippos per kilometer of river.

The South Luangwa National Park is one of the best places in Africa to see leopard.

Other carnivores which may be seen on your South Luangwa safari include lions, hyenas, caracal, serval, wild dog and side striped jackal.

Many more mammals can also be seen such as Impala, Puku, Buffalo, Zebra, and Common Waterbuck to mention but a few.

The South Luangwa also has the Cookson’s Wildebeest and Thornicroft’s Giraffe both of which are endemic species to the Luangwa Valley.

Birdwatching is superb in the Luangwa Valley, with over 400 of Zambia’s 732 species of birds occurring here.

There are 39 species of raptor and 47 migrant species, so there is plenty for any birdwatcher to spot throughout the year.
