Kakuli is a classic tented bush camp located on one of the very original camp sites in the central region of the South Luangwa National Park.

Enjoying an elevated position, well above the flood lines on the banks of the Luangwa River, Kakuli has spectacular views and is one of the few bush camps open for Zambia’s green safari season.

Kakuli has four simple and traditional walk-in safari tents each with en-suite facilities constructed of thatch and reed. A two-bedroom family unit is also available. There is a basin, separate flush WC and large shower with hot and cold running water. The front of the tent can be completely opened up offering lovely views of the river from the comfort of your bed or the veranda. Sandy walkways link the tents to the central camp area, also constructed of reed and thatch and set on a raised deck. Consisting of a bar and dining/lounge area this is the perfect spot to relax overlooking the grazing lagoon as wildlife meanders past.

It is an exciting base for walking and game drives in the dry season, and is Norman Carr’s only camp open in the heart of the Park between 20 Jan – 5 April, for boating and walking.

Safari Experience

This area of the Park is renowned for offering guests some of the best game viewing opportunities in Zambia.

Guests of Kakuli can decide daily if they wish to venture out on foot for guided bush walks or by vehicle, with night drives also permitted. During the green season (January to early April) activities are either by boat on the river or on foot in the drier, sandier areas that surround camp.

Wildlife & Birdlife

This region is Zambia’s premier wildlife destination, nestling at the southern end of an offshoot of the Great rift valley,  the South Luangwa National Park which covers an area of 9050 square kilometres in the east of the country.

The park, renowned for its unspoiled beauty and varied habitats, supports one of Africa’s richest concentrations of game and birdlife.

It is famous for predator sightings.

Over forty species of large mammal and some four hundred species of bird thrive in this last haven of wild Africa.

The meandering Luangwa River with its many ox-bow lagoons and shady ebony groves forms the eastern boundary of the park, whilst the western horizon is dominated by the spectacular Muchinga escarpment, rising almost a kilometre from the Valley floor.

Endemic species found only in the South Luangwa National Park include Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s Wildebeest.

There is exceptional birding from Kakuli – especially in the Green Season.

Plenty of Pel’s Fishing Owls have been spotted from camp – a birder’s dream!
