This vast open plain lies west of the Zambezi River, on the Angolan Border. This vast open plain is part of the Zambezi catchment and is flooded from late December to early May. The plain is flat – horizon to horizon and under the huge skies run 30,000 blue wildebeest along with zebra, red lechwe, oribi, eland, buffalo and others. These antelope are prey to many hyena, some wild dog, lion and a few cheetah.
Liuwa is unique in that it is home to the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa and it is known for its hyenae that hunt in large clans of up to 50. Liuwa Plain may be remote, but it is well worth the journey. Set departures are available from April to June and October to December.
The Lozi King (Litunga) of the Barotse tribe and Barotse Royal Household & his Queen will be taken from their low palace (Lealui) to their high palace (Limulunga) to escape the Zambezi Flood. They are paddled in 2 huge canoes by 50 oarsmen!This event took place on 8 April 2017 – the first time in 3 years and happens near Liuwa Plain.

Liuwa is great for birding enthusiasts – with some 334 bird species including vast flocks of stork, wattled cranes and black winged pratincoles that arrive in their tens of thousands.

Made famous by the BBC documentary The Hunt who aerial filmed a dramatic African wild dog pack co-operative hunt. But they move quickly and can cover huge tracts of land, so no sighting in Liuwa is at all certain.
Lions made famous by Beverly and Derek Joubert’s documentary: The Last Lioness.Lady Liuwa still survives (Jan 2017) and she’s with Sepo and the two young lioness at the moment near Matamanene Camp. She’s looking skinning but still alive!
