Nanzhila Plains Safari Camp is located in the southern sector of Kafue National Park, Zambia. 

The camp overlooks a large dambo (seasonal floodplain) amongst large African ebony and sausage trees. It is remote and wild, and yet the closest lodge within the Park to Livingstone and the Victoria Falls. 

This small and intimate 12 bed lodge is a must for the safari connoisseur wishing to experience this very special part of the amazingly diverse Kafue National Park.

It was developed in 2005 on the original site of the Nanzhila Rest Camp, (established in the 1950’s), using labour and renewable materials sourced from the communities in the adjacent Game Management Areas.

The lodges consist of the main insaka (lodge) set on an elevated deck offering a panoramic view of the pool and surrounding woodland, 3 thatched en-suite chalets and 3 en-suite canvas meru-style tents, tastefully decorated with teak and wicker furniture, each with unobstructed views.

Safari Experience

A variety of activites are on offer including game drives which focus on larger mammals in custom built open 4wd safari vehicles,

The drives are scheduled early morning and late afternoon/early evening when most nocturnal creatures are active.

Guided walks focus on birding, trees and flowering plants, traditional uses of flora and identification of tracks and signs.

A full day excursion, along with packed lunch and refreshments takes you up to Lake Itezhi-Tezhi.

The elephant orphanage and Ngoma Forest provides a opportunity to see the parks amazing diversity, whilst village tours show you the typical life of rural communities.

Relax in camp with a good book or explore the bush with an experience guide – the choice is yours.

 

Wildlife & Birdlife

This huge Park, with it’s astonishing array of habitats, boasts the greatest diversity of species of any National Park in the sub-region, including more than 160 mammals species.

It is the best place to see cheetah and is a stronghold for the wild dog; both of which are regularly seen in the Nanzhila area, along with lion, leopard, hyena and the smaller carnivores including serval, civet and wild cat.

21 antelope species have been recorded and the likes of roan, sable, hartebeest, reedbuck and oribi are likely to be seen along with elephant and warthog, and, if you are lucky, species such as wild pig and honey badger.

The Kafue is a birder paradise with over 500 species having been recorded.

The pool in front of the lodge is home to numerous species including herons, geese, ducks and jacanas as well as wattled crane and saddle-bill storks.

Nanzhila is also probably the best area to encounter the black-cheeked lovebird, endemic to this small part of Zambia.
