Set in a vast open plain, a private entrance to Namib Naukluft Park makes Kulala Desert Lodge the closest location to Sossusvlei, while magnificent views of its famous red dunes, ever changing colours and mountainous scenery, makes it the most spectacular.

There are 23 thatched and canvas “Kulalas”. Each Kulala is specially adapted to the unique desert conditions, built on a platform to ensure maximum airflow with an extended thatch roof providing cool respite from the sun. All have en-suite bathrooms with a shower, flush WC and basin, ceiling fans (no air-conditioning), a veranda with views of the dunes and a private rooftop deck that gives guests the opportunity of spending the night under the magnificent African sky (bedrolls provided). The main area, with northern African-inspired décor, has a lounge, bar, dining area, swimming pool and wrap around veranda overlooking a waterhole.

Safari Experience

A waterhole in front of the main building gives the opportunity to see gemsbok (oryx), springbok, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, ostrich and jackal.

Activities impress guests with the overwhelming magnitude, solitude and tranquility of the desert. They include nature drives into the desert, walking trails including the Tsauchab River Trail (no children under 13 years), guided visits to Sossusvlei and Sesriem (through the lodge’s private entrance) and the scenic sundowner excursion is one of the best scenic safaris in the Namib.

Charged-for optional extra activities include balloon safaris (closed 15 January – 15 February), horse riding safaris and eco sensitive guided quad biking (no children under 16).  New activity in 2017 is E-powered fat bikes as a fun, easy and eco- friendly way to explore the Kulala concession.  Most routes are 2 to 3 hours long, whilst one is 4 hours.  This exclusion is paid for locally in camp.
