Etosha, meaning ‘place of dry water’, enclosing game rich savannah and a huge salt pan of 22,000km². Productive waterholes fringe the edges of the pan sustaining a high density of large mammals from elephant and lion, as well as hippos and rhino to vast herds of springbok, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe and gemsbok. Usually a shimmering white horizon, come the rains the pan fills with water, stimulating the growth of blue-green algae attracting thousands of beautiful pink flamingoes to waft in.
With excellent roads, Etosha is a perfect self drive venue where a wait at the edge of a waterhole will be well rewarded as game approaches through the shimmering haze. If you prefer to have a guided safari, there are superb lodges in Etosha to provide this service.
Bordering Etosha is the wonderful Ongava Private Game Reserve with large concentrations of wildlife, known for successful reintroductions of white and black rhino and spectacular luxury camps.
