Bazaruto Archipelago

Paradise found!  The captivating Bazaruto Archipelago lies off the southern coast of Mozambique. It’s a collection of unspoiled islands strung together with crystal clear turquoise water to form what is known as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean.”

The archipelago boasts sensational beaches, magnificent scenery and luxury lodges all lying within a marine national park that protects a huge variety of reef fish as well as giant turtles, devil rays, the endangered dugong and 140 bird species.

Bazaruto and Benguerra are the largest islands where you will find luxurious villas and beach chalets offering a fantastic range of experiences and activities including land rover island drives, cultural encounters, bird watching, beach picnics, deep sea fishing, star gazing, dune boarding, snorkel or scuba diving or travel like the locals on a colourful dhow trip – the list is endless!  Our favourites include: Azura Benguerra and the Anantara Bazaruto Resort & Spa.

The gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago is Vilanculos and from there it’s an easy light aircraft or helicopter flight to your chosen desert island.

Introduction

Situated 30km off the coastal mainland of Mozambique, this island paradise is made up of several idyllic tropical islands. Known as one of the most romantic island getaways and the ‘Crown Jewels of the Indian Ocean’, the crystal white beaches and tall palms are surrounded by warm turquoise seas with a wealth of marine life and unspoilt nature. A national park protects the exquisite aquatic life and coral reefs and is regarded as the perfect setting for an off the beaten track Robinson Crusoe style honeymoon getaway. This tranquil setting combines 5 star accommodation with delicious locally caught food, an ideal spot for peace and solitude after safari.

The mainland islands support an interesting array of wildlife as palm trees give way to lush vegetation where the samango monkeys, green coucals and blue-cheeked bee-eaters reside. 45 reptile and amphibian species live on the islands, of which two are endemic to the archipelago. Freshwater lakes are inhabited by crocodiles and a myriad of 150 bird species, including the Mongolian plover, various petrel species and the occasional flamingo. Numerous endemic butterfly’s and mammals make appearances, with the elegant suri antelope and red duiker being favourites.

Warmed by the waters of the Mozambique stream, the seas are clear with mile upon mile of undisturbed and pristine reefs home to 2000 species of fish. Diving and snorkelling activities offer a once in a lifetime, up close experience with the exquisite diversity. Beginners can get into the swing of things at the dive school while experienced divers explore the seas up to depths of 30 meters. The inner reef supports a dazzling selection of hard and soft corals along with reef fish in all shapes, sizes and colours, from tiny coral fish to the mighty bass. The islands are a fisherman’s paradise, providing big game fishing for marlin, barracudas, sailfish, tuna and king mackerel to name just a few. Lodges offer numerous marine activities, including surfing, water sports, kayaking and whale watching. Finish off the day on a dhow as it sails through the warm tropical waters home to humpback whales, whale sharks, dolphins and manta rays and observe the rare loggerhead turtle nesting on the beaches. This is also one of the few places in the world where the endangered dugongs can be seen.

When To Visit

The Bazaruto Archipelago offers a warm, tropical climate with less rainfall than further south. The best time to visit is May to October during the cooler, dry winter months Diving is available throughout the year; however the months of May to September are best. The rainy season of October to March may result in lodge closures due to heavy rains.

January to April – January is the peak of the rainy season as temperatures reach an uncomfortable 31°C and humidity is high, so is not considered a good time to visit the archipelago. Visitors to the islands in the hurricane season of February and March should be prepared for the occasional downpour of rain. Visibility for scuba diving is often reduced as a result of windy conditions. March and April are the best months to go fly-fishing for kingfish, ladyfish and pompano in the channels between the islands. Marlin and barracuda are common at this time of year. Towards the end of April, temperatures begin to reduce, and lower humidity levels make this a better time to visit the islands.

May to September – Regarded as the best time to visit the archipelago, these cooler, less humid winter months average 27°C during the day and 16°C at night. June is one of the best months to see and potentially swim with humpback, common and bottlenose dolphins whereas sailfish patrol the waters in July and August. Visibility for scuba diving is often reduced as a result of windy conditions. Migrating humpback whales can be spotted from June to September

October to December – With temperatures averaging 29°C during the day and 22°C at night, the onset of the rainy season brings relatively heavy rainfall in December and high humidity which can feel uncomfortable. These months offer the best time for large black and striped marlin fishing, which can weigh 400kg! Whale sharks are most commonly spotted at this time.
