The South Luangwa National Park is situated in Zambia’s renowned Luangwa Valley, at the tail end of the Great Rift Valley. It boasts one of Africa’s highest game concentrations, around the river, and was the pioneering locale for walking safaris’s still one of the best ways to experience true African wilderness (between June to September). Founded in 1938, South Luangwa was declared a National Park in 1972, and this 9050km zone is now one of the most accessible and popular parks in Zambia. The terrain consists of dense woodlands, oxbow pools, floodplains and patches of grassland.
You will be met by your camp hosts for a 4×4 road transfer from Mfuwe Airport for a 2.5 hour game viewing transfer through the park.
Spend 2 Nights at Kaingo Camp in a Chalet on a Fully Inclusive Basis
Kaingo Camp is situated in a grove of large ebony trees beside the Luangwa River, deep inside Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. Owned by Derek and Juliet Shenton, the camp has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and its remoteness allows for a peaceful and exclusive safari. Derek and Juliet’s staff have worked in the Luangwa Valley for many years and have an intimate knowledge of the bush and its wildlife. The camp is set alongside the Luangwa River, and each chalet at Kaingo has its own private deck on the river.
Built and run by Derek Shenton, third generation conservationist and safari guide, Kaingo has a stylish design, and features six traditional brick and thatch chalets set on the banks of the perennial Luangwa River.
Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom and an outdoor bathtub tucked under shady trees. A centrally located chitenje includes the dining room, leadwood tree bar and a relaxing lounge. Kaingo and its sister camp, Mwamba are built to have a minimum impact on the wilderness, with no electricity and or noisy generators running all day, promoting solar panel use and water filtering.
While staying at Kaingo, guests have access to an unparalleled network of photographic hides. These offer fantastic opportunities for close-up encounters with the abundant wildlife. With just four guests per open vehicle and first class guides, day and night drives are a superb way to see the prolific wildlife of the area.
After a morning game viewing activity at Kaingo you will take a shared 4×4 road transfer through the park to your next camp – Tena Tena.
The valley is dependent on the Luangwa River, a major river system which supports the area’s large buffalo and elephant herds, Thornicroft giraffe, plains game and prolific birdlife. Cookson’s Wildebeest and Crawshay’s Zebra are endemic to the area, and the brightly coloured migratory birds, and bird of prey from as far afield as the Russian steppes draw visitors throughout the year. Hippo and crocodiles dominate the waters, and on the steep sandy banks, the fascinating carmine bee-eaters busily dart in and out of their nests.
Spend 3 nights at Tena Tena in a Luxury Tent on a Fully Inclusive Basis
Mature mahogany trees shade this small intimate camp on the eastern bank of Zambia’s Luangwa River. Your stay at Tena Tena is set against the majestic backdrop of South Luangwa National Park.

Other game that may be encountered on day and night game drives includes leopard, giraffe and many plains game species. It is also possible to take walking safaris, accompanied by an expert guide. A seasonal photographic hide is positioned to allow superb viewing of a nesting colony of carmine bee-eaters. Dry season game viewing is intense, with huge pods of hippo and an abundance of wildlife on the riverbank.
Camp activities: morning and late afternoon game drives, walking safaris and a cultural/village tour. Evenings are spent listening to nocturnal animals and stargazing.
After a morning game viewing activity you will take a shared 4×4 road transfer through the park to Mfuwe Airport.
Flight Departure: 12:20 hrs Arriving into Lusaka: 1330 hrs
Connecting with your light aircraft flight departing at 1405 hrs arriving in the Lower Zambezi National Park at 1440 hrs.
Zambia is a landlocked country of remote national parks and fascinating history. Forming its southern boundary, the mighty Zambezi River cuts its way across the land, creating a wealth of verdant vegetation and sustaining the country’s rich wildlife. Stretching from the life-affirming waters and riverine foliage, the Lower Zambezi National Park extends through mopane forests, floodplains and the game-rich valley floor, and onwards to the natural barrier of the northern escarpment.
A relatively undeveloped national park and the youngest in the country, the Lower Zambezi lies across the river from Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools, and together they form a massive wildlife sanctuary. Bigger mammals, predators, elephant herds and plains game are attracted to the valley and game viewing is particularly good during the winter months (June to September). Crocodiles and hippo dominate the waters, and along the Zambezi banks, the canopy of ebony and fig trees are alive with the constant movement and calls of numerous avian species. Although not a big 5 destination (no rhino) the Lower Zambezi National Park offers an exceptional safari experience, with walking safaris, fantastic tigerfishing, game drives and canoeing adding to the allure. Oddly enough giraffe are completely absent from Lower Zambezi with no record of them ever having lived here.
Spend 3 Nights at Chiawa Camp in a Luxury Safari Tent on a Fully Inclusive Basis
The family owned and operated multi award winning Chiawa Camp is a private, luxury camp owned by Grant Cumings, whose family founded the camp in 1989 when it pioneered safaris into the area. Chiawa is tastefully designed to fit in with its magnificent setting amongst a grove of mahogany and acacia trees.
Activities: While staying at Chiawa guests can explore the beautiful Lower Zambezi National Park either on foot with an armed guide or can enjoy excellent wildlife viewing on both day and night drives in open 4×4 vehicles. Canoeing on the Zambezi River is also a great way to view the birds and mammals along the riverbank, or for those who want the more relaxed option sundowner cruises can be organised. Catch & release angling.
22 August – 4×4 Road & one of the best experiences of a 90 minute Boat Transfer to Chiawa’s sister camp, Old Mondoro. This is a wonderful safari experience viewing large elephant herds, hippos, crocodiles and a wide diversity of birdlife.
Spend 2 nights in a Bush Chalet on a Fully Inclusive basis
Old Mondoro is a quintessential safari camp set in a grove of acacia trees on the banks of the Zambezi River near the Chakwenga River confluence. It is a beautiful site overlooking a maze of hippo-inhabited islands and channels.
Riverine foliage, floodplains, forests and the mighty Zambezi River make this a verdant wildlife destination and a birders’ paradise. Ideally start your day with an early morning game drive, warming up with a coffee stop. If it’s an option, you could spend some time canoeing or tiger fishing, or rest up in a shady spot during the midday heat. A guided walking safari is an exhilarating way to experience the bush from a different vantage point, learning about smaller animals and plant life. In the late afternoon, hop back onto your open safari vehicle and continue the search for game. Alternatively, enjoy a sundowner cruise appreciating the view of hippos, crocs and ellies while on the river. Night drives afford the chance to see a completely different array of animals, found with the help of a spotlight.
