Away from the big city lights, the Klein Karoo is a region of semi-arid desert, imposing mountain passes and surprisingly beautiful oases. It’s about endless skies and natural wonders. Closer to the heart of the country, the Klein Karoo’s farming communities, quirky towns and wide open spaces are as appealing as the warm hospitality of its people. Towns such as Montagu, Calitzdorp, De Rust and Oudtshoorn offer home-style meals, local arts and crafts, and historical treasures.
Route 62, the longest wine route in the country, extends past eccentric little villages, farming communities and established fruit and wine producers. The route is an off-the-beaten-path glimpse of life in the more remote regions of the Cape, and its charm lies in its tranquillity and unpretentiousness. Striking mountain passes such as the Swartberg, Mitchell’s and Prince Alfred’s Pass cut through the region affording panoramic views from winding roads.
Spend 2 Nights at Montagu Vines Guesthouse in 1 Luxury Queen Bed Garden Room including breakfast.
Montagu Vines Guesthouse is nestled between the mountains in the quaint “Route 62” town of Montagu, and set within picturesque gardens. Previously a vineyard, the property has an established olive grove which extends out from the stately Victorian main house with the rugged mountains and rock formations an impressive backdrop. The attractive historic feel of the house merges well with its elegant contemporary style and a generous dash of country charm.
8 en-suite rooms are tastefully decorated, well-appointed for convenience and have shared or private patios/verandahs and lovely vistas over gardens, mountains and the grove. Fireplaces chase away the winters chill, and heated summer days invite guests to soak in the central plunge pool. Leisurely breakfasts may be enjoyed in the dining room, whilst soaking up the tranquil setting of the olive grove. The house is a short stroll from the fascinating town centre with its restaurants and historic buildings. This area is renowned for rock climbing, walking, hiking and mountain biking trails, and forms part of the Route 62 wine route which incorporates a number of top wine estates.
Continue your self-drive to Oudtshoorn, the principal town of Little Karoo. Passing through scenery to take your breath away, from mountain passes to arid Karoo along the scenic Route 62.
Spend one night at Mooiplaas Guest House in a Luxury Room including Breakfast.
This stylish guest house lies in the heart of the Klein Karoo, on an expansive, working ostrich farm. This family-run operation is just south of the quaint town of Oudtshoorn, and boasts spectacular vistas of the magnificent Swartberg Mountains – this is big sky country. Mooiplaas offers an authentic farm-stay and attentive, personal service. 28 spacious rooms provide country-style luxury and have their own entrances as well as a patio/balcony from which to appreciate the scenic views. Enjoy leisurely breakfasts in the dining area and in the evenings, lanterns create a charming ambiance. After sundowners in the atmospheric pub, savour delicious traditional Karoo cuisine. Guests can soak up the tranquil setting from the comfort of a sun lounger beside the pool.
Depart Oudtshoorn joining the Garden Route at the town of George, on the coastal route to Plettenberg Bay.
Spend 3 nights at Laird’s Lodge in a Deluxe Room including Breakfast.
Laird’s Lodge is a gorgeous country house on a 24 acre estate perfectly positioned between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
This is the perfect positon to explore the Garden Route highlights including close encounters with whales and dolphins or walking and feeding the Knysna Elephants, visiting Monkeyland and Birds of Eden or sunbathing and swimming on one of the pristine beaches.
We can arrange a number of private tours including the Featherbed Excursion, Kynsna & Plettenberg Bay Tour and Tsitsikamma National Park Tour.
Not a garden in the true sense of the word, the Garden Route is more in the way of a “Garden of Eden” an area of natural wilderness with endless expanses of untamed primal forest and pristine beaches. Imposing mountains line the roads and waterfalls cascade from dramatic cliffs into blue-green seas. Lush vegetated hills drop down to rocky coastlines and ravines shaped by thundering seas.
This majestic stretch boasts Storms River, the mouth of which is located within the Tsitsikamma National Park, and bustling resort towns are found dotted amidst the picturesque landscape. Plettenberg Bay is well regarded for its sandy beaches and Wilderness and its hospitality.
The vibrant town of Knysna nestles on a massive lagoon, the entrance to which is guarded by the iconic Knysna Heads.
Numerous outdoors activities allow guests to explore the peaceful trails and country tracks which wind through towering trees and shaded glades, across sun-splashed shores and along “barely-there” paths. Ocean and lagoon cruises, good wildlife sanctuaries and nature reserves add to the attraction of the Garden Route.
Continue your self drive from Plettenberg Bay to Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, a Big 5 malaria-free location in the Eastern Cape.
Welcome to the Eastern Cape…
Birthplace of many of the country’s big names, Mandela, Hani, Biko and Sisulu, the Eastern Cape reaches from a coastal region of pristine beaches and forests, to the arid desert landscape of the Karoo. Such varied scenery means you could be watching whales off a craggy coastline, bouncing along through a grassland reserve, and exploring the lunar landscapes of the desert’s all in a matter of days. Sweeping views of barren plains stretch as far as the eye can see, and ancient rock formations jut dramatically from the earth, reaching for the heavens. Aloes and brightly coloured Xhosa houses dot the topography, a splash of colour in the stark countryside.
Stay for 3 nights at Great Fish River Lodge in one Suite – Fully Inclusive. The 9 Suites feature classic-contemporary interiors, fold-away glass doors and private decks with plunge pools and endless views.
Twice daily game drives are offered in the morning and afternoon/evening as well as one hour guided bush walks from the lodge, and fishing.
At Kwandwe, your days are designed to thrill you with intimate wildlife encounters and your evenings to delight you with the indulgence and romance of the African night. You will be woken at dawn with hot tea or coffee to be followed by a morning game drive in open 4 x 4 vehicles in the company of a game ranger and tracker team. You will explore Kwandwe’s diverse terrain in search of cheetah, black rhino or elephant. Return to the lodge for a delicious breakfast and then take a short walk if you wish with your ranger around the lodge to spot the smaller things. Then lunch and the opportunity for a siesta or dip in the pool before afternoon tea and heading out on an afternoon/evening game drive. This game drive begins in the late afternoon and lasts until after dark, when spotlights are used for a glimpse into the nocturnal bush life. Spot the rarely seen porcupine, aardwolf or aardvark. Enjoy sundowners in a scenic location as the sun slowly sinks beneath the horizon. Spend 3 – 4 hours tracking rhino with a specialist ranger and tracker team. Learn about the
habits of this threatened species, the issue of rhino poaching as well as Kwandwe’s own conservation efforts. Then return to your lodge for a mouthwatering dinner around a blazing fire in a boma or in your lodge’s dining area.
Unwind in the spacious guest rooms appreciating the uninterrupted vistas from wraparound viewing decks, or socialise before a roaring fireplace. Browse through the elegant library and safari shop and select quality wines from the cellar for pairing with the delicious Pan-African cuisine. Dine under the star-studded sky in the boma, or in a candlelit dining room. Romantic meals can be served in the privacy of your suite.
After a morning game drive, depart Kwandwe with a self-drive to Port Elizabeth Airport to drop off your hire car and connect with your flight to the UK.
