Tuli Block

The vast Northern Tuli Game Reserve is Botswana’s surprising hidden gem of a wildlife paradise, bordering South Africa to the south and Zimbabwe to the east.

Few reserves can offer such exciting game viewing experiences where the animals are remarkably relaxed around safari vehicles.

It is a land of spectacular vistas, unusual topography with sandstone ridges, rocky outcrops and wide open savannah plains and riverine forests punctuated by huge baobab trees. Tuli means dust in Tswana, the language spoken in the area around the Tuli Block and Northern Tuli Game Reserve.  The climate here is semi-arid with low rainfall. Summer rains are unpredictable, but when they do fall between November and March bring forth colourful floral displays.

Within Tuli lies Mashatu Game Reserve, a sanctuary to the largest, single population of Elephant on privately owned land.  The wildlife experience at Mashatu is very personalized with dedicated, experienced Tswana rangers and trackers, enthusiastic to show you their world.

Over 350 species of birds can be spotted, while leopard, lion, cheetah, zebra, giraffe, eland, impala and steenbok amongst others are encountered out on the plains.

This is a year round destination with 336 rain-free days each year.

Safari travellers are not limited to traditional 4×4 open game viewing vehicles as walking, mountain biking and horseback safaris are all on offer.  Tuli also has a rich archaeological history too, dating back over one million years which visitors can explore with a guide.

Introduction

The 72800 hectare Northern Tuli Game Reserve (NOTUGRE) lies within Tuli Block bordering South Africa and Zimbabwe.

NOTUGRE is a conservation success story that over the last 50 years has returned Tuli into a pristine wilderness and created a transfrontier conservation area spanning three countries.

As a result, Tuli has become one of Botswana’s foremost safari destinations.

The game viewing is excellent.  Hours can be spent with the vast herds of elephants that lend the place its affectionate name “The Land of the Giants” with a recent aerial survey revealing a population of almost 1000 elephants.  This is remarkable since there was an absence for half a century.

Thick riverine vegetation lining the numerous dry river beds is ideal for Africa’s most elusive cat, the leopard and it is not rare to have multiple sightings during one game drive.

Whilst the open plains are home to good cheetah populations.

Tuli is renowned for its geographical features — Solomon’s Wall by the Motloutse River at the southwestern corner of the Tuli Block, as well as for its location near the Tswapong and Lepokole Hills where the ancestors of the San people left traces of their rock paintings.

Mashatu Game Reserve, Tuli – Because of the exceptional diversity of landscapes of the reserve, Mashatu enjoys an ecological biodiversity uncommon in other game reserves. Three members of the Big Five, namely the leopard, the lion and the elephant are complimented by some lesser well-known, but interesting, species, including the aardwolf (or “earth wolf”), the bat-eared fox, the African wildcat, the honey badger, the spotted hyeana and the black-backed jackal.  For visitors who are interested in bird life and bird photography, Mashatu is home to more than 350 bird species, including the enchanting lilac-breasted roller. The lilac breasted roller is Botswana’s national bird and has striking plumage which made up of eight different colours.

The Tuli is readily accessible by road from South Africa and all the major cities in Botswana.

Guests can also fly non-stop from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

When To Visit

The climate over most of southern Africa is mild and pleasant. Hot, humid conditions are usually experienced in the Tuli region. Heavy summer thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening may be experienced.

However, they are usually of short duration. Rainfall occurs mostly during the summer months (October – March). During the winter months (May to September) very warm clothes including a windbreaker (anorak) are essential.
