Named for Scandinavian royalty, King’s Pool Camp overlooks the handsome oxbow-shaped King’s Pool Lagoon in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve bordering Chobe National Park.

The camp is in the Linyanti Private Concession which extends to 125,000 hectares of wildlife rich habitat.

This 100% solar powered camp boasts eight luxurious thatch and canvas rooms, each with a large bedroom area and lounge leading to a verandah that soaks up the gorgeous views.  The spacious en-suite bathrooms have double showers and hand-basins, as well as an outdoor shower for those who wish to shower ‘in’ nature! The spacious main area comprises a lounge, dining room and a convivial bar beautifully set on expansive raised decks. There is also a pool and an open-air ‘kgotla’ for evening dining under the stars.

One of the highlights of the area around Kings Pool is that it is home to large elephant herds that traverse the area – especially in the winter months – together with wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, waterbuck, steenbok, warthog and roan. Predators such as lion, leopard, spotted hyaena and wild dog all follow. Two hides, one with the water at eyelevel, are perfect places to spend your siesta: elephant feet and trunks almost within touching distance!

Safari Experience

The Linyanti Wildlife Reserve has abundant wildlife in a wide variety of species, but is most noted for its very large elephant population which can reach enormous densities during the dry winter months. Other game is abundant, such as impala, lechwe, kudu, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and bushbuck, and their predators: lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and spotted hyaena. Rarer species such as sable and roan antelope also emerge from the woodlands during the dry season. Birding is spectacular.

Activities include day and night game drives and walks.  Or enjoy your day on the colonial-style Queen Silvia barge along the Linyanti River.  All ideal for photographing birds and wildlife. In the dry season, guests can spend their siesta watching game come down to drink at the unique underground hide, where the view is at eye level.  

 

Wildlife & Birdlife

Aside from roan, other plains game includes red lechwe, Burchell’s zebra, blue wildebeest, impala, common waterbuck, sable, eland, southern giraffe, chacma baboon, vervet monkey, warthog, hippo and Cape buffalo. Nocturnal species often seen are lesser bushbaby, spring hare, aardwolf, serval, large spotted genet and, if you are extremely lucky, the elusive pangolin! Birding is outstanding here ranging from Okavango specials, such as slaty egret, Hartlaub’s babbler, Bradfield’s hornbill, white-breasted cuckoo-shrike, Bennett’s woodpecker, swallow-tailed bee-eater, coqui francolin and Arnot’s chat. The open areas are excellent for Kori bustard, ostrich, secretary bird and southern ground-hornbill, with southern carmine bee-eaters in summer. The Savute Channel is famous as an area with a high concentration of eagles and raptors and this area is internationally recognised as an IBA (Important Bird Area), particularly for birds of prey like Dickinson’s kestrel and waterbirds. There are also various owl species to be seen here such as Verreaux’s eagle-owl and African Scops-0wl.
