Top Reasons to Visit the Lower Zambezi as the Season Starts

Posted by on September 11th, 2017

Category: Zambia

Easily reached – it’s only a short light aircraft hop from Lusaka!  The Lower Zambezi National Park may be one of Zambia’s smallest parks, but it is certainly one of it’s most picturesque and packed with amazing wildlife.

The main attraction is the dry season (July to October) game viewing when the diverse wildlife congregates near the Zambezi River.  However there are some good reasons to visit this region at the start of the season which is in April & May but don’t take it from us, this is what the Professional Guides at Sausage Tree & Potato Bush Camps say:

Cape Buffalo Herds

Tourist densities are low at this time of year and you often have the place to yourselves both on river and on land.

Dining in the Bush

The weather is calm and clear, still relatively warm during the day, but cooling to a fresh crisp cool during the evening – so perfect for a good night’s sleep!

Water based Game Viewing

The skies are big and bright which make good photo opportunities during the day and exceptional stargazing at night.

The rainy season is just about over leaving the bush lush and green.  The feeling of wilderness is never so apparent as the smell of the bush that abounds after 4 months of no human contact.

Water everywhere attracting birdlife from far and wide, including many a migrator from different corners of the globe.  Flocks of Wooly-Necked and Abdims storks hundreds thick, come to feed on the millions of corn crickets and circle the skies along with vultures and raptors.

Walking Safaris get the adrenalin pumping

It’s a time of plenty, so numbers of newborns are high.  Elephants, hippos, impala, waterbuck, lions and leopards often have their young doing well at this point.

We also often get surprised by new immigrants, like lions that come in search of females or new territories, as well as very rare and special sightings such as the cheetah, first seen in late April.

A different perspective

The camps are pretty purrfect too!

Beautiful camps to pamper body and soul

So there we have it!  We at The Big 5 Safari Company will organise your Zambian safari from start to finish, including your light aircraft hops, boat and road transfers, as well as incorporating those lesser known unique experiences that make a trip so memorable.

We’d highly recommend that you combine the Lower Zambezi with the phenomenal South Luangwa National Park, for the perfect mix of habitats, land and water based safari activities, as well enjoying the exceptional Zambian hospitality.  In our opinion, Zambia is in a class of its own when it comes to an authentic bush experience, if you’ve not visited yet, you really should!
