The Green Season – a Time of Plenty

Posted by on August 9th, 2017

Category: Southern Africa

A safari in the Southern Africa green season (or Emerald season as it’s also known) is truly a gem.  During times when we all are looking for value for money, travel during this season is well worth considering for both experienced safari travellers as well as those lucky enough to be planning their very first safari holiday.

When is the Green Season?

The Green Season falls between November and March/April and is aptly named because the summer rains turn Southern Africa into a lush productive paradise. It won’t have escaped your notice that this nicely coincides with the UK winter and therefore I hope we have got your attention as we further describe the attributes of Green Season travel.

What’s the Wildlife Viewing Like?

The start of the summer rains bring forth an explosion of new life and many species give birth to their young including impala and elephants. This begins from November onwards with the arrival of the short rains. Predator sightings are frequent as they take full advantage of the abundance of inexperienced younger prey.  Birdwatching is sensational.  Think colourful birds in breeding plumage and abundant species to train your binoculars on as migrant bird species join the party.  The wildlife revels in the verdant conditions and looks healthy and happy.

Green Season Weather

Summer mornings are exceptional.  Unlike the winter months, it will be warm when you set off on your morning game drive and the light will be especially beautiful.  Rainfall levels during this season vary from country to country, so it’s best to talk to one of our consultants to avoid any pitfalls. However rains, when they do occur, mostly fall in heavy afternoon thunderstorms and result in very dramatic cloud formations that can provide perfect photographic conditions.  The air is clear and dust-free.

More Reasons to Choose a Green Season Safari

More affordable – There is a marked drop in prices compared to a dry season safari (July to October). There are also Specials – contact us for more details as we have some great offers.

No Single Supplements – in most camps these are simply not applied during the green season.

Fewer travellers.  The wilderness areas of Southern Africa offer superb year round opportunities for an exclusive safari experience, nevertheless there are regions that do get busy in peak season.  Green season travel avoids this, offering a much more personal experience.

Vibrant floral displays attract masses of of colourful butterflies and moths.

Where to Go

Take to the skies over Botswana’s Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan National Parks and witness the height of the zebra migration –  Africa’s longest land migration.

It’s April – Fancy some luxury bush camping with the renowned Robin Pope Safaris.  In the South Luangwa a combination of two fixed camps and an overnight “bush camping” will make for an exceptional off the beaten track safari experience.  Only in the green season can you explore the lagoons and ebony groves by boat in this special wilderness.

The Central Kalahari Desert – This semi-arid savannah is transformed by the summer rains when sweet grasses in the valleys attract herds of antelope species who are followed by the predators. One for the safari connoisseurs.

Victoria Falls – At the end of the rainy season the Victoria Falls is at it’s most spectacular although may be a little difficult to photograph with all of the spray!
