Sensational Sleep Outs Deep In the Bush

Posted by on September 25th, 2017

Category: Southern Africa

Sleep Outs in the bush are for the hopeless romantic (ideal as a wedding or anniversary treat), the adventurer, the person who needs a complete disconnect and digital detox, or the wildlife enthusiast who prefers the bush au-natural.  We’ve picked a few of our favourites here to show what’s on offer in the african bush…

Malori in Tswalu Kalahari Private Game Reserve, South Africa

Your private vehicle will whisk you to Malori, your sleep-out deck in the bush where your guide will set up sundowners and canapés, while you take in the panoramic views of open savannahs.  Malori is a raised platform and a thatched overhang with weather-proof blinds to protect you. Choose to sleep under the thatch or simply roll the bed onto the open deck with thousands of stars above you.

Your guide will then prepare dinner for you, or you may opt to join in, making the most of your own private Kalahari as the sun sets before you and the moon rises behind you. Wake at sunrise to the blissful sounds of birdsong.

Chalkley Tree House, Lions Sands Game Reserve, South Africa

Love this one – it’s Chalkley Treehouse in the Lion Sands Game Reserve, where Guy Aubrey Chalkley once set up camp in a majestic centuries-old Leadwood Tree to escape the predators roaming the plains below. It was decided that this would be the ideal place to build the ultimate bush bedroom!

A secure and lavish platform under the stars, the treehouse has all the 5-star comforts, but affords an experience as wild as the animals that roam beneath it. Guests are taken to the treehouse at sunset, where drinks and a scrumptious picnic dinner await.

Little Makalolo, Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

This one is set within a private concession in Hwange National Park.  Situated on a raised platform overlooking Madison Pan, the Star Bed is just a 20-minute drive away from camp and offers a truly secluded, up-close-and-personal wilderness experience and the opportunity of sleeping under the stars.

Simplicity itself – a comfortable bed roll and mosquito netting, sitting area, basic ablution facilities and the sounds of the African bush all around you.  Oh and a highly-qualified guide will be on standby – just in case..

Kanana in the Okavango Delta, Botswana

Kanana Camp’s sleep out deck is located deep in the remote Okavango Delta. It’s completely open to the night sky allowing for unobstructed views of the sky and the sounds of hippos grunting in the distance. In the morning you’ll be met with a beautiful African sunrise and a nice, warm cup of tea or coffee to round out your African sleepout experience.

Luwi Camp, Luangwa Valley, Zambia

For an adventurous and exclusive addition to your safari spend a night like the first safari pioneers.  With your private guide and scout team you will head out on foot  into the remote Luwi dry river bed spotting game along the way.  Then as you round a bend, you eyes will behold your camp for the night set out on an idyllic wide sandbank. Sundowners and dinner will be served in the most amazing style (given where you are!), followed by camp fire stories.  Then to bed – with just a bedroll, mosquito net and the stars overhead on this “return to the wild” unique sleepout!

Little Kulala in the Namib Desert, Namibia

Little Kulala is a luxurious desert retreat situated in the private 27 000-hectare Kulala Wilderness Reserve – with private access to the Sossusvlei Sand Dunes.

Eleven climate-controlled, thatched “Kulalas” (the word means ‘to sleep’) merge impeccably into the desert landscape. Each Kuala has a rooftop star bed just perfect for romantic star gazing and then starting your day waking up to a magnificent sunrise over the Namib desert.
